It is better to consume whole fruits rather than fruit juices to benefit from the natural fibers. Dark leafy green veggies such as spinach and broccoli as well as orange ones like squash and carrots are rich in antioxidants to combat the free radicals that harm the cells in the body. Consume whole grains instead of processed white flour since these are rich in fiber and contain more nutrients. Protein is not only found in lean meat and fish but also in eggs, milk, beans, and nuts. Calcium found in milk, cheese, and yogurt strengthens the bones and prevents osteoporosis, especially in women. A proper diet reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, bone loss, and anemia. Avoid fatty food, too much sodium or salt and unhealthy carbohydrates such as highly refined rice, flour, and sugar.
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, even if this means additional trips to the toilet. The risk of dehydration increases with age since the kidneys function less efficiently with age. With better health, quality of life is improved.
Although mental decline is considered an inevitable part of ageing, it is possible to keep the brain sharp even with advancing age. There are several ways to slow down brain ageing and this includes physical fitness and healthy diet, as mentioned above.
